A creature older than many, Hippocampi have been present in many ancient cultures, from the Greeks to the Etruscans to the Romans. This sometimes winged half-horse, half-fish hybrid is most well-known as the chariot puller of the god Poseidon, and artworks of it can be found in everything from pottery to mosaics to statues, with one of the most famous works being the Trevi Fountain in Rome! Depictions vary, with some dropping the wings, adding more fishy features, or even having all four hooves instead of a tail.
For this version, I played more with the classic hybridization, using fin-like wings and traditional cloven hooves. Its build became more freeform over time, but began with inspiration from the Andravida and Thessalian horses and Mediterranean fish. This big guy was definitely a challenge, but he's quickly grown into one of my personal favorites for the series, and I hope he swims his way into your heart too!
