Behind the piece, from the artist

A somewhat lesser-known creature from the rivers and lochs of the Shetland Isles of Scotland, the Nuggle (also called the Njugle or the Neugle) is a mischievous, water-dwelling spirit that takes the form of a horse. Unlike some similar myths, they prefer to play pranks rather than cause actual harm. They can be recognized by their wheel-like tail that they often try to hide.

For this little guy, I'll admit that I struggled a bit! Trying to translate the tail into something potentially feasible proved to be a challenge, and trying to create an environment similar to Kelpie without being a complete copy stumped me. But I did know that I wanted him to be inspired by the Shetland Pony. For his tail, I decided to use fairy knots (also called witch's knots) to resemble a spoked appearance and to give a wink to the Nuggle's fae origins. In the end, I really like how he turned out, and I hope you love him too.
