Inspired by the magic in the changing of the seasons, the whimsy and wonder of woodlands, the relationship between women and horses, and traditional associations of the fae with nature, this season-based series is a short, personal love letter to many of the things that inspire me as an artist, all wrapped in a nod to the iconic art nouveau movement (also a personal favorite!).
With the season of fall comes colors, and lots of them. For autumn, I wanted to capture the variation of warm tones in the leaves and trees. I also wanted to portray the "slowing down" that nature begins to exhibit with our little sleepy fairy! For the floral aspects, I aimed to keep them cohesive with the overall palette, choosing mums, marigolds, and white Gaillardia (also called the blanket flower); mums and marigolds are also two flowers I heavily associate with this time of year here in Kentucky. For the border, I knew I wanted copper from the moment I started planning this series almost a year ago; it fits just too perfectly. For our fairy's equine companion, I decided to go with a blood bay to add some contrast and focus the eye toward the center. This pair was an absolute delight for me to draw, and I hope they inspire the fall spirit for you just like they did for me!
